Blade Runner

Blade Runner (1982)

The original (and the best) Blade Runner was shot in 1982 and directed by Ridley Scott. You could make the case that the architecture in Blade Runner is as important as any of the protagonists. Interestingly, the film is set in Los Angles in 2019 - I can't help but be equal parts relieved and disappointed when I compare the film to modern day LA. The inspiration for the world was inspired by Architecture with Syd Mead, the production designer stating that:

“I took the two world trade towers in New York City and the New York street proportions as a .today’ model, and expanded everything vertically about two and a half times. This inspired me to make the bases of the buildings sloping to cover aboutsix city blocks, on the premise that you needed more ground access to the building mass.”

Beyond Architecture as inspiration, Blade Runner is an amazing example of how to capture architecture in film. The film is shot in the film noir style with creates a sense of pessimism, fatalism and menance. The style of the architecture including the way it is shot - mood lighting, panning shots, cuts and appropriate music create a sense of suspense and unease in the environment.
